Susan volunteers at CT Furniture in Newcastle.

How long have you volunteered for us / when did you start?

I started two year ago last April. I normally work 4-days a week, but currently I'm working 5-days, as it’s so very busy. I will be going back down to 4-days shortly. I work 8.30am to 4.30/5pm depending on how hectic we are.

How did you find out about CT / volunteer work?

Paddy, my husband has volunteered at CT for the last 4 years in the Newcastle warehouse and as a casual driver. He introduced me. Our son Andrew also volunteers with us as a drivers mate.

At site what do you do?

I work in the warehouse in a customer service role. Serving customers and greeting them as they arrive. I help them to choose furniture and take the payment, processing the order through the computer and arranging delivery.

Although I'm doing the same job on a day-to-day basis, as there are always new customers calling in, no two days seem the same.

Where did you work before?

I worked as a customer service advisor for Mecca Bingo in Gateshead for 16 years. I retired on the Saturday and started at CT on the Monday.

Why do you volunteer?

I like to meet new people. I feel like I'm serving our community and making a difference.

The team at CT are all ‘a canny’ bunch to work with, it’s like a small family. They are all a great laugh and the managers are brilliant. You can sit and talk with them if there are any issues. Plus, it gets me out of the house!
