About Us

Our history

Community Transport (CT) began with a simple but powerful act of service in Birmingham during the early 1960s. Father Bryan Scrivener, a local clergyman and former army chaplain, noticed the growing needs of families living on low incomes in his community. Using his ex-Army Land Rover, he started helping people move house, storing donated furniture in his front room and distributing essential items to those who needed them most.

As demand for his support grew, Father Scrivener formalised his efforts. In 1966, Community Transport was officially registered as a charity. The organisation quickly expanded beyond furniture support, pioneering door-to-door transport services for people with physical disabilities—a revolutionary idea at the time.

CT is proud to be the original Community Transport charity, with a long-standing legacy of putting people first and breaking down barriers to mobility, independence, and opportunity.

Today, CT operates primarily in the North East of England, continuing its mission to serve individuals and communities with compassion, innovation, and care.

What we do

Our mission is to create a better everyday life for local people.

We operate through three core service areas, each area offers services at affordable and competitive prices.

CT Passenger

CT Passenger offers safe, reliable, and accessible transport services designed to improve the quality of life for individuals who face mobility challenges. We deliver contracted transport for local authorities, schools, healthcare providers, and third-sector organisations.

We also provide affordable minibus hire—both accessible and standard—for community groups, charities, and non-profits looking to arrange group travel.

CT Furniture

CT Furniture collects and sells donated second-hand furniture through our stores across the North East. We help individuals and families on low incomes furnish their homes affordably, with dignity and choice.

Our service also promotes sustainability by keeping usable furniture out of landfills. We offer a convenient collection service for households and businesses wishing to donate unwanted domestic or office furniture.

CT Training

CT Training provides accredited, transport-related training to organisations across the private, public, and voluntary sectors. Our training supports workforce development, ensuring individuals and teams are confident, capable, and compliant with current transport safety regulations.

Through our training programmes and volunteering opportunities, we help people gain the skills, experience, and confidence needed to enter or return to the job market—while also fostering greater social inclusion.
